Somewhat heated discussion of nova-related issues between myself and aberranteyes. Those of you who read my journal, but not his, may find it... interesting.
Good grief. In my universe, no one ever openly advocated that sort of thing. Of course, we also didn't have a single unifying event and source of all metahuman abilities either.
The worst that the US/UN had was 'hot sleep', wherein individiuals with powers that couldn't be restrained were placed into induced comas. There was also considerable body of law on metahumans, since the appearance of The Cloak in 1939; significantly more time to work publically on it.
But brain surgery? I mean, yes, there were lunatics and madmen (and the Pomegranite Brothers) who were in favor of such things, and GENOCIDE was advocating such things against mutants for their brief time they existed before PRIMUS shut them down. But in the mainstream? The body of law to allow someone to be put into 'hot sleep' is insane. This sort of thing would never work in civilized countries.
And if someone in the United States tried it, Americana would KNOW. She was SCARY. She'd bring friends to stop it.
One of my earlier missions with SPIRIT - the UN metahuman special forces team - was dealing with a VIPER project to implant cloned metahuman tissue into normal people to give them powers, after mindwiping and mental programming. UNTIL - the United Nations Tribunal on International Law - arranged for them to be extradited to the Hague for their international crimes, and then the Turks - this was in Turkey we found them - tried them for their crimes on Turkish soil and handed down their sentence, and then they were handed back over to UNTIL for their sentence. (This is, in fact, a negotiated treaty situation - UNTIL runs EuroStronghold and the Mountain - prisons for metahumans and for known terrorists - and it's paid for out of UN funding.)
I admit that I could do something like that. But...
I've been called a 'mad scientist'. But that revolts me at a level I can't conciously work with. You don't just rip out a piece of someone's brain.
With the metahumans, mages, Street sams and just about everything bloody else running around in my universe...not to mention the general...chaos as it were....the person who suggested this would be deleted just on general principle.
I'll take your word for it. (Though aberranteyes just mentioned something called the "Humanis Policlub". He compared it to my own world's "Church of Michael Archangel"*, a fundamentalist/dominionist Christian offshoot which regarded novas as literal demons from hell, even when most of baseline humanity was deeply enamored of us. Their reaction to novas commonly involved murder attempts, which succeeded more often than you'd expect or like.)
* As far as I know, the name's just an ironic coincidence.
Max shook her head. Well those in Humanis Policlubs are favoured targets. I have disposed more than a few in my day. She gives a slight smile. I would never suppose you for a demon sir, unless your temper matches your hair...and well it is said that some demons are said to be beautiful.
I've usually managed to keep my temper controlled, here and in the Nexus, but yes, it is possible for me to "get my Irish up" as it were. I have inner demons, but I've spent a long time taming them. And I'm flattered if you're including me among the beautiful demons, even though you're the wrong gender for us to be more than friends. Still, from a purely aesthetic appreciation, I like the way you look.
Who has not had their inner demons? I know I do and am still in the process of taming them. Max looks mildly surprised, but then smiles slightly. My appologies, It was a compliment not a come on line...if I were to come on to someone, I favour a more direct approach. I have never mastered the art of flirtation. Her smile turns appolgetic. I like the way you look too, as I have already maintained.
